A wonderful place to live!

Colonel William Chisholm, a shipbuilder and merchant founded Oakville in 1827. having purchased 960 acres from the Crown at the foot of Sixteen Mile Creek. He established the first privatley owned harbour in what was then Upper Canada, managing trade between Hamilton, Toronto, across the Atlantic and of course our neighbours to the south.

Originally from Nova Scotia, a son of a Scottish immigrant, Chisholm had a long political career. He served in the York Militia and was in the war of 1812, becoming a Colnel in 1831.

Declared a port of Entry in 1834, William Chisholm became the first customs inspector. His son George King Chisholm became the first Mayor of Oakville after it became a town in 1857, while his brother Robert Kerr also served as mayor for a term in 1866.

 Oakville Industry

Ship-building, timber and farming were other notable industries in Oakville at the time, however in the 1850's the economy took a hit and the foundry (the primary industry in town in its day), closed.

Basket making became a major industry in the town after the recession in the 1850's, and eventually a railway running through Oakville was constructed.

More recently the Petro-Canada refinery, Procor factory, and more notebaly, the Ford Motor Company came to Oakville and are large providers of employment in the town. helping the increase of residents, as employees moved closer to their work.

Approximatley 130 sq km in size, Oakville is full of natural beauty, and even with the increase in construction the past couple of decades, the town has still retained its vast trail system for all to enjoy as well as the wonderful lakefront.

Situated between Toronto to the East and Hamilton to the West, and the border to the U.S approximatley 1 hour away, it is a perfect location for comuters who have to travel to these cities for work, yet offering them a quality of life that is unobtainable for most certainly in Toronto.

The 2006 census showed there were 166,613 people residing in Oakville, an increase from the previous census in 2001 of over 14%.

While there are some condominiums, and a fair amount of townhomes in Oakville, the vast majority of homes here are large single family homes, with no shortage of the detached houses, with larger lots, garages, and newer construction, making the homes more energy efficient, lower opperating costs & much lower maintenance.

Streets are wide, and the town is well landscaped offering many tree lined streets that give you a feeling of space rather than the more urban feel of decaying properties and infrastructure found in larger cities. It does not hurt that there is also 2400 acres of parks in the town either.

Oakville boasts a good school system both Catholic and Public schools with enviable score cards from the respected Fraser Institue. There are many private schools as well, most noteably Appleby College.

Oakville is also home to Sheridan College, with its world renowned reputation across the globe, especially in animation, business, and producing some of canada's finest talent in the theatre industry today with their Performing Arts programme.

Treat yourself and go see one of the many productions that they offer.

It is also very convenient to both Pearson International Airport, or as it becomes more popular Hamilton International Airport. Oakville Transit is effective, reasonable, and timely, and the envvy of any transit system.
